International Muisc Fraternity
Sigma Alpha Iota was founded on June 12th, 1903, at the University School of Music in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Our seven founders are Elizabeth Campbell, Frances Caspari, Minnie Davis Sherill, Leila Farlin Laughlin, Nora Crane Hunt, Mary Storrs Andersen, and Georgina Potts; all of whom were upperclass or graduate students at the university. From "History of Sigma Alpha Iota" by Elizabeth Campbell in the PAN PIPES of April 1910, on the founding of SAI: "...when seven gifted young musicians solemnly pledged themselves to help each other with sisterly affection, stand for the highest possible musical scholarship, for nobility and uprightness of character, and for the maintenance of friendly and unselfish relations among women in the musical profession." |
